Before/after comparison photo of Mittelaltesch glacier (Bernese Alps)

Height: approx. 2800 - 4000 metres above sea level
Location: Aletsch, Valais, Switzerland Show glacier on: Swiss map... GLAMOS...
The Mittelaletsch Glacier is located on the south-eastern side of the Aletschhorn (4,194 m). Until around 1980, the Mittelaletsch Glacier extended to the Great Aletsch Glacier and supplied it with ice. Around 2022, the upper part of the glacier lost contact with the tongue. Since then, the tongue has no longer been supplied with ice and shows signs of severe decay, such as collapse funnels. This dead ice is expected to have melted away by 2035 at the latest.
