08.09.2017: Story of the Gamchi Glacier: Melting of an iceberg in just over two years

This story shows how a mighty iceberg on the Gamchi glacier (Kiental, Bernese Oberland) has melted down almost completely in just over two years.

From this point the photos below have been taken. This and the photos below show that the iceberg was not only high on 12.7.2015, but also covered a large area.
  • Yellow dots:
The yellow dots show the outline of the iceberg on 12.7.2015.

Location of the comparison photos
The rubble dump proved to be relatively stable between 2015 and 2017. Already on 12.7.2015 the rubble mound should have been almost ice-free. The distance from the place of shooting to the iceberg was much longer than it looks like in the photo.

The process described in this story has been repeated several times in recent years. Thus the Gamchi glacier lost its length and mass dramatically. There is no sign of a turnaround.
