Before/after comparison of Stein glacier (Bernese Oberland, Swiss Alps)

Height: Height above sea level: 1950 - 2900m
Location: Gadmen, Haslital, Bernese Oberland, Switzerland Show glacier on: Swiss map... GLAMOS...
The glacier Stein Glacier (Steingletscher) is located in the uppermost part of the Gadmertal valley (Haslital, Bernese Oberland). It is known because the glacier retreat has created a quite large lake (Steisee or Steinsee) and the glacier can be seen very well from the Susten Pass (Sustenpass) road. Between the end of the lake and the glacier tongue there is already a distance of more than one kilometre.

The capture points of this comparison are quite different. Reason: In the flat forefield of the glacier, the creek is always looking for a new path.

18.08.2023: Since our last visit in 2018, the area of the glacier terminus of the Steigletscher has changed considerably. This is because of ongoing climate warming and the rockfalls of 2019/20. See also observations of 18.8.2023 and Story Ice and rockfalls on Stein glacier.
