This spherical panorama photo shows a funnel, which is located in the lowest part of Furgggletscher (east side). At this point a part of the drainage of the Upper Theodul Glacier flows laterally into the Furgg Glacier. It is easy to see how a cave has formed in the bottom of the funnel. The flowing water draws air into the cave, which is warmer than the ice. This accelerates the melting process. The cave becomes larger, with time a tunnel is created, later possibly an ice bridge.
