Glacier terminus
Synonyms: Glacier snout
Glacial ice flows slowly downhill like a very viscous liquid. When the ice flows through a narrow valley and the glacier ends in it, a glacier terminus (also called glacier snout) forms. The terminus of melting glaciers is usually flattened, while the terminus of increasing glaciers is thickened at the front. Since we documented glaciers, we have only encountered flattened glacier terminuses in the Swiss Alps.
