Tweets about the Gries Glacier

Below is a selection of interesting tweets related to the Gries Glacier.

12.09.2023: The crevasse, which reaches down to the glacier bed, widens within a year.

In September 2022, during the annual measurements on the Gries glacier, specialists from GLAMOS discovered a crevasse a few metres deep at an altitude of about 2800m.a.s.l., which reached down to the glacier bed.
Within one year, several metres of the surrounding ice melted as a result of the low-snow winter of 2022/23 and the high temperatures in the summer of 2023. At the same time, the crevasse has widened.

The crevasse mentioned above is located approximately at the red point. I.e. far away from the end of the glacier.
Photos of the crevasse (as of 2022 and 2023) and further information can be found in the post (formerly tweet) by Matthias Huss below.

05.09.2022: Mass loss in 2022 compared with previous years

The graph included in the tweet shows how much mass the Gries glacier has lost in 2022 (= red line). The thin dark gray line shows the course in the previous negative record year 2003. The blue dashed line shows the average of the years 2011 - 2021.
